In the hot summer, it has become the norm to use wet curtains to cool down. Today, I will share with you some basic knowledge and precautions about wet curtains and their use in detail.
The specific principle of wet curtain cooling
First of all, understand the specific principle of wet curtain cooling:
The hot air outside the chicken house enters the chicken house through the wet curtain due to the negative pressure in the chicken house. The air temperature of the wet curtain is greatly reduced.
Misconceptions that need to be clarified are:
The cooling pads mainly uses water to evaporate into water vapor, absorbs a large amount of heat to cool down, and relies on the cold water circulated above to cool down, which can only account for a small part. The actual data is that if the temperature of 1 kg of water is raised by 1 degree Celsius, the heat absorbed is 1 kcal, but if 1 kg of water at about 20 degrees is evaporated into water vapor, the heat absorbed is 619 kcal. Therefore, it is not the temperature of the circulating water that determines the cooling effect of the wet curtain, but whether there is enough wet curtain area and wind speed. Of course, I personally think that under the same premise, the lower the water temperature, the better.
In addition, if the air humidity in the chicken house is too high, the water will not be easily evaporated. At this time, the cooling effect of the wet curtain will be greatly reduced.
Get to know the wet curtain itself
At present, the height of the commonly used wet curtain is generally 180CM, and the thickness of the paper core is generally 15CM. The outer frame of the wet curtain has several materials such as aluminum alloy, galvanized sheet, and stainless steel.
Regarding the calculation of the wet curtain area of each chicken house, there are generally two schemes for reference.
The first method: calculated according to the air volume conversion rate of the wet curtain
Just remember that for a wet curtain with a thickness of 15cm, the air volume conversion rate is: 120 ventilation volume/min·square meter.
Then: the total area of the wet curtain in the chicken house = the maximum ventilation per minute of the chicken house / conversion rate
Example:
There are eight 48-inch fans installed in the chicken house (the theoretical ventilation of each 48-inch fan is 580 cubic meters per minute, this value is marked on the fan by the manufacturer)
The total area of the wet curtain in the chicken coop is: 580 cubic meters/minute*8 units/120=38.6 square meters
The second type: calculated according to the wind speed through the curtain
Just remember that when the maximum ventilation is turned on, that is, when the fan at the end of the house is fully turned on, the ideal wind speed over the wet curtain should be 2 m/s.
Then: the total area of the wet curtain in the chicken house = the total exhaust air volume of the chicken house per second / the wind speed through the curtain
Example:
There are 8 sets of 48-inch fans installed in the chicken house (the theoretical ventilation rate of each 48-inch fan is 580 cubic meters per minute)
The total area of the wet curtain in the chicken coop is: 580 cubic meters per minute * 8 units / 60 seconds / 2 meters per second = 38.6 square meters
In fact, the two are connected, and the air volume conversion rate of the wet curtain is converted based on the ideal wind speed of 2 m/s. In actual installation and use, the required effective wet curtain area is generally slightly larger than the theoretical calculation (1-1.25 times), which can be controlled by yourself.
The installation position of the wet curtain
The installation position of the wet curtain in the chicken house, as well as the advantages and disadvantages are analyzed as follows:
The first
The wet curtain is installed at the front end of the chicken house or the front side wall, and the exhaust fan is installed at the end of the chicken house.
This is the most common installation method at present, and it is also the most unfavorable installation method for chickens. The reason is that the temperature in the chicken house is not uniform, the cool humidity in the front of the chicken house is high, and the heat humidity in the end is low.
The second
On the basis of the first type, install a part of the wet curtain at the rear 1/3 of the chicken house, generally 1/4 to 1/3 of the area of the front wet curtain.
This mode can greatly alleviate the temperature difference between the front and back of the chicken house, and at the same time, it can also ensure the cooling effect of the chickens at the back end of the chicken house.
The third
The wet curtain is directly installed at about 1/3 of the front of the chicken house, and the exhaust fan is installed at the end. At the same time, there is an air inlet at the front of the chicken house.
This is also the installation mode with the lowest cost and the best effect at present. The hot air enters from the front of the house and although the temperature is high, the birds are still very comfortable because there is enough wind speed and the air is fresh at this time. When reaching the position of the wet curtain, the cold air from the outside passing through the wet curtain is mixed with the hot air, so that the temperature of the air will not drop too low while satisfying the cooling requirement. When reaching the end of the house, the air is also not as dry and hot as in the first mode. Although the cooling effect will be slightly worse than the second type, the advantage is that the cost is low and the cooling temperature difference is small.
The fourth
One side of the chicken house is a wet curtain, and the other side is a fan. The cooling effect is unquestionable, but the input cost is high.
It is generally suitable for chicken houses with a single shed breeding capacity of more than 50,000 and a chicken house span of more than 16 meters.
Of course, the views on the installation position of the wet curtain are different from those of the beholder. Depending on the area and the condition of the chicken house, there will be slightly different opinions, but the principle is the same.

Keep your flock well-hydrated and enjoy the convenience of effortless watering.
The use of nipple drinker systems in poultry houses offers a more hygienic, economical, and sustainable method of water supply and distribution, positively affecting poultry health and production efficiency. As a result, it is preferred as a modern and effective watering method in poultry farming. Businesses can gain a competitive advantage by conserving water resources and reducing labor costs. The use of nipple drinker systems contributes to the sustainable and successful growth of the industry by improving poultry house hygiene and poultry health.
Poultry equipment are tools or instruments that are used for purposes like hatching, brooding, housing, feeding, cleaning, and maintaining good conditions in poultry farms. Basically, small farm owners require manual equipment that will effectively fulfil their purpose but at the commercial level of production, the huge amount of birds will require more sophisticated equipment and labour with technical-know how to power them. Depending on the level of your production, there is a variety of equipment to select from.
Once you’ve decided that chickens are right for you, it’s important to gather the needed chicken supplies BEFORE you bring them home.
